I'd missed the train after our brief hiatus! It was nice to wake up this morning and think "I wonder where I am now?" then roll up the shades (yeah, this train had shades!) and see the Atlantic Ocean out the window. New Brunswick. That's where we were.
We played cards for a large proportion of this train ride, and at one point, an elderly man walked up to us and asked "Do you like card tricks?". He then proceeded to show us some, and he taught us card tricks to trick the other one with. He then showed us one which I can't describe because apparently an old fisherman will curse him if anybody figures out how to do it. And that was our introduction to the Maritimes.
We got off in Moncton, just to say we'd been to Moncton, then at about 4:30pm the train rolled into foggy Halifax. We had nowhere to stay, but the hostel was right next to the train station, and there were 2 beds left. Lucky! But we still had nowhere to stay for tomorrow. It just so happened that it was free Tuesday at the Maritime museum of the Atlantic, so we headed there and were very amused by a parrot that said "Oh crap" when the tour guide approached.

I am planning a trip in October on the North American Via Rail pass. Will be departing Halifax to Montreal on the first leg of the trip. Do you suggest any particular routes to take or special events to take in. Any help in planning the trip would be great. I am able to travel in Canada or U.S. for 30 days and want to make the most of the time. Hope to hear from you. I am glad that you have a good time in Halifax, N. S.

Great travel blog Terry - just completed a Montreal to Vancouver trip over the Christmas holidays, so your trip descriptions brought back fond memories.
My all-time trip for the future would be to travel on the "Adirondack" from Montreal to New York City, then take the "Acela" from NYC to Washington D.C. Next travel to Chicago, on to Los Angeles, up to Seattle and finally move over to Vancouver.
Since I took "The Canadian" during the dark winter months where night lasts from 3:30 in the evening to 8:30 in the morning, it would be a good idea to take the train back to Montreal and get to see all the sights that were blacked out during the last trip.
Good luck with your future travel plans Terry and thanks for sharing all your quirky experiences traveling across Canada.
