What's up, Internet?
This year's been pretty cool in terms of travel. Over January and February, I was able to spend time in my home cities Ottawa and Montréal, check out Le Carnaval in Québec City, eat deliciously and say hello to Louis Riel in Winnipeg, visit some things in Calgary and check out Banff. I also spent some time in the United States but that isn't really important, is it?
At the end of may, I met a good friend who had just driven across Canada from B.C. (by way of California) in Toronto and with her, we drove to Sudbury to check out some abandoned and derelict sites that were only accessible via side roads, wading in swamps, fending off angry swallows and subjecting ourselves to many mosquito bites.
In July, I spent 17 days documenting climate change research on Canada's largest icebreaker, the Louis S. St. Laurent. The ship took me from Dartmouth, NS to Resolute, Nunavut - Canada's second most northern community. This was my fifth time to Nunavut - my first on an ice breaker - and definitely one of the most memorable things I've ever been able to do.
After that, I drove across the United States from North Carolina to LA. Now, I'm in Denmark and in November, I'm spending two weeks in Israel. I'm kind of looking forward to being back in North America and staying put for a while but still, I feel there is much left to see.
I love the train and love to reminisce about taking the train from Ottawa to Halifax with my school band in 1999. It's a great way to meet people, see Canada and get into a bit of mischief along the way.
Basically, this blog is going to be all about these trips. Hopefully you like reading about it!
I don't think this blog lets me embed Youtube videos so here's a still that links to a 12-second video I shot with my mobile phone out the window while taking the train to Toronto.
