Sudbury (2007/05/26-2007/05/27)

Camp Bison.

Besides some serious but short downpours, the drive from Toronto to Sudbury was fairly uneventful.  My friend and I had no real place to stay as most of our friends from Sudbury find themselves amongst the young exodus of this mining city leaving only older relatives behind.  So, we stayed at a hotel on the edge of town and struggled to find nutrition.

A pair of vegan tourists in Sudbury on Sunday after 5PM make for a difficult pair to feed. We ended up ordering cheeseless pizza and got snacks from a nearby convenience store.  Not too stellar.

We woke early and drove south until we go to our secret spot.  What came next was a bit of driving down some dodgy dirt roads until it got too bad at which point, we proceeded on foot.  We were walking parallel some train tracks for a while but eventually took our own path.  Cold swampy areas infested with mosquitos and flies were hard to avoid.  At one point, we took off our shoes and waded knee deep through some pretty murky waters. Who knows what we were stepping on?

Some swampy waters

After visiting the place for a few hours, we started our hour-long walk back to the car, through swamps, crossing creeks with logs and getting eaten alive by mosquitoes.  We got back to the car to find that immediately in front of the car was a giant pile of earth that wasn't there when we initially parked.  A few metres away was a creek that made it impossible for cars to go further down the road but in case that wasn't enough, I guess our presence prompted the contracting of a backhoe to dig another trench and create the resulting mound.

Shrugging it off, I put on the Bouncing souls and we drove off, starting the six hour drive back to Ottawa. It was only the next morning that we discovered thatthe Sudbury police checked the plates on my friend's car and called her parents to inform them that their daughter's car was found completely deserted. Wonderful detective work!

Burwash Station

PS: there's a video of Burwash on Youtube somewhere. Find it.
