Traveling with my Grandchildren Taking my Grandchildren on Via Rail for the first time. We left Oshawa Ontario and went to Halifax, Nova Scotia for a family wedding. The children had a great time on the train. One conductor even did magic acts for the kids, then he let one of the children announce the next stop and they even helped to pick up the recycle things. My grandchildren are ready to go on another trip with me on the train.

Oh, Canada! How my VIA train journey from Vancouver to Halifax started my obsession with this great country of mine!

Steel Rail Stories When I needed to travel from Ontario to Alberta for a summer job, I decided to ride the Canadian on the three-day trip west. I loved it and since then have been trying to ride every VIA Rail train in Canada. Here are the sights, feelings, and memories from the rails.

In August 2007, I had the pleasure of touring an awesome part of the province and also had the pleasure of staying at four of the many gorgeous heritage inns around the province.

French Connection In April of '07 a classmate and I traveled from Cape Breton Island to Truro to catch the train to Quebec City. This was the first trip by train for both of us and we were extremely excited. We boarded the train in early afternoon - around 2 ish I think - and were delighted by everything, from the look, to the taste in the air from the smells coming from the dining car - it was dinner time - and we were starving! We dined on the train - it was amazing, as the countryside passed by we ate and drank and were really merry!! *smile* After many long hours we arrived in Quebec, wee hours of the a.m. and headed to our hotel in Saint Foy. I have to say, after not speaking french for 14 years, the connection was made and the Francais just kept flowing out of me. We spent a week in Quebec city and this included a number of days specifically in Old Quebec. We traveled the public transit and spoke to locals that we met along the way. It was a blast and the train ride home, although a little longer and rougher (due to the older car we had) was still amazing and I will do it all over again in a heart beat! The staff were all great and the customer service was apparent. Good Job VIA!! Good Job!

My Canada The true north strong and free; it's our home and yet so many of us really only know the small part of the country we grew up in. I'm from Nova Scotia where I fell in the love with the ocean. I carried that love to the other side of the nation into the Pacific while visiting family on the West Coast the last few summers. I'm proud to say I've swam in two of the oceans that border Canada. Now it's time to re-connect with everything inbetween. My blog will be a reflection of my travels across Canada as a kid and outline my plans to cross the country, by train, after graduation from university this spring. This land is my land and I want to see it all.

Beyond the Maritimes I have traveled across the country in many different ways at many different times in my life most of the time by rail. I am now a VIA Rail employee and I am excited to share my travel experiences both as a customer and now as an employee.

JohnnyCashSpecial Our train trip started in Halifax, NS, ended in Ottawa. We stayed there to take in Canada Day 2008. We had a great window view of all the events for several days, including the great fireworks, and our grandchildren came to enjoy them with us. Our return trip to Halifax ended in Moncton because of a train accident in Halifax. However, we had a great time watching Joe trying to arrange travel for is "sheep" he had to look after. He took us to lunch in Moncton, we all walked back to the VIA rail station and boarded the Bus. We were looked after while on route, with a bagged lunch, drinks and fruit! Actually it was quite fun. Our luggage came by separate travel, a TRUCK! All ended well at VIA rail Halifax, baggage was there, and lots of memories

Iron Rails Across Canada Our family decided that this was the year to take the Via train across Canada, mainly because children 11 years old and younger travel for no charge (poor mom and dad had to pay the full fare). We are starting our adventure in the Rocky Mountains near Jasper and then will do some fishing in Northern Alberta. We will then take the train eastward.
